1. Agreement
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) are an agreement between you and Genie (“Genie”, “we”, “us”) about your use of the Genie website, applications and services (together, the “Service”). By creating an account, posting a review, sending a message or otherwise using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
These Terms sit alongside our Privacy Policy and our Safety Centre. Where the Safety Centre describes how something works in practice, it describes what we actually do; where these Terms govern, they govern.
2. Eligibility
- You must be 18 or older to create an account or use the Service. There are no exceptions for supervised or parental-consent use.
- One account per person. You may not maintain more than one account, and you may not create a new account after your previous one was suspended or removed.
- You must be legally able to enter into this agreement in the country you live in, and you must not be prohibited from using the Service under any applicable law.
- You may only review a person you actually dated, where the relationship is the kind Genie describes (from a few dates upwards).
3. Your account
Accounts and sign-in are provided by Clerk. You are responsible for keeping your credentials secure and for activity under your account. Tell us promptly at legal@genie.app if you believe your account has been taken over.
The name and email you use for sign-in are not displayed publicly, and are not attached to your reviews. Anything you choose to publish — a display name, a handle or a bio in your profile — is your choice to make public.
We may suspend or remove an account that breaks these Terms, and we will act without notice where someone’s safety is at risk or where we are legally required to.
4. Review content rules
You keep ownership of what you write. You may only publish it here if it meets these rules, and every review is checked against them before it can publish.
- No private contact details. No phone numbers, email addresses, home or work addresses, social handles written with a domain, licence plates, or any other detail that locates someone precisely. This applies to the person you are reviewing and to you.
- No diagnoses or labels. Do not diagnose or label someone. Terms such as narcissist, sociopath, bipolar, psycho, crazy, insane, criminal, stalker or abuser are refused by the content screen and are not permitted anywhere on the Service. Describe what happened instead.
- No impersonation or fake reviews. Reviews must come from a real dating relationship with the person named. You may not review someone you have not dated, create a second account to review the same person twice, or pretend to be someone else.
- No private or intimate media. No photographs, screenshots of private conversations, intimate images, or recordings. Do not publish someone else's private communications, even if you were party to them.
- No illegal content and nothing about minors. Nothing unlawful, and nothing sexual involving anyone under 18. Genie is a service for adults reviewing adults.
- No spam, promotion or solicitation. No advertising, affiliate links, recruitment, fundraising, or off-platform services. Genie is not a marketplace.
- Nothing you do not have the right to publish. Do not copy someone else's writing, and do not publish information you obtained unlawfully or under an obligation of confidence.
Some of these rules are enforced automatically: private contact details and diagnosis or label words are blocked by the content screen on your device and again on our servers, and a review that trips them cannot be submitted. The rest are enforced through reporting and moderation. A review that passes the screen is not thereby approved — it can still be reported and removed.
5. One review per person
One account may hold one review of one person. If you have already reviewed someone, you must edit that review rather than write a new one; the Service will refuse the second attempt.
Creating additional accounts, asking someone else to review on your behalf, or coordinating multiple reviews of the same person is a breach of these Terms and a reason for immediate removal of the reviews and the accounts involved.
6. No harassment
Messaging is anonymous and private. Reviewers can accept, decline, block or report messages at any time, and the Service enforces those choices.
- No threats, intimidation, coercion, or encouragement of self-harm or harm to others.
- No repeated contact after a decline or a block, including through another account or another channel.
- No attempts to identify a reviewer, to pressure anyone into breaking anonymity, or to retaliate against someone for what they wrote.
- No collecting the content of the Service to contact, expose or organise against anyone.
- No use of Genie to further a dispute that belongs somewhere else — a family court, an employer, or a police matter.
Harassment and threats are the fastest route to losing your account, and we preserve records where we are legally required to, or where a credible threat to someone’s safety is reported to us.
7. No defamation
Do not publish a statement of fact about an identifiable person that is false and that harms their reputation — for example, an allegation of criminal conduct, of infidelity presented as fact, or of a medical or psychiatric condition. That is defamation, and it is your responsibility, not ours.
Honest opinion, honestly held and based on what you experienced, is what Genie is for. Keep opinions clearly opinions: “I found the communication inconsistent” is an opinion. “They were seeing someone else the whole time” is a factual claim you must be able to support.
We do not adjudicate disputes between members, and we are not a court. We remove content that breaks these rules; we do not decide who is right.
8. Licence you grant us
You retain ownership of your content. To run the Service you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, store, reproduce, display, distribute and make derivative technical adaptations of your content (such as resizing, formatting and translating it for display) for as long as it remains on the Service.
This licence is limited to operating and promoting the Service. It ends when the content is deleted, except for copies retained in backups for a short period, in anonymised or aggregate form, or where we are required to keep a record.
9. Moderation and removal
- Reporting. Any review, message or profile can be reported with a specific reason. Reporting is rate-limited so it cannot be used to bury content you dislike.
- Auto-hide. A review that receives three independent reports is hidden automatically pending human review, and stops counting towards that person’s scores while it is hidden.
- Moderator decisions. A human moderator can leave content up, hide it, or remove it. We try to tell you when your content is affected and why; we do not need your consent, and we are not obliged to give notice first.
- Appeals. If you believe a decision about your content was wrong, reply to the notification or email legal@genie.app with the review and your reasons. Appeals are looked at by someone other than the original decision maker wherever possible.
- No removal on request alone. We do not remove a review because its subject dislikes it, and we do not disclose who wrote it.
10. Reviews are opinions, not checks
Genie is a reference network. It is not a background check, a criminal-records service, a credit reference, or a verification service. We hold no government or identity records, and we do not verify reviewers, subjects, or the contents of a review.
Reviews are the subjective accounts of people who dated someone. They may be inaccurate, unfair, out of date, or written badly. You are responsible for how you use them. Do not use Genie to make decisions about housing, employment, credit, insurance, immigration, child custody or any other formal assessment.
10a. Employer, education and faith details
Profiles can carry a person’s employer, job title, school and faith or religion. Reading these is part of the paid plan; writing them is open to any reviewer.
- These fields are unverified and unverifiable. They are whatever a reviewer typed. We do not confirm them against any source, and the person described has not been asked to confirm or correct them.
- The person described has not consented to being listed. A profile is created when someone writes about them, not by them. They can ask us to remove or correct these details under section 9.
- Faith or religion is sensitive. It is recorded as reported, may be wrong, and may be contested by the person it describes. Treat it as an unverified claim rather than a fact about someone.
- Your legal obligations are unchanged by this section. Nothing here permits using these details to make decisions about housing, employment, credit, insurance, immigration, child custody or any other formal assessment, or to treat anyone differently where the law prohibits it. That restriction in section 10 continues to apply, and it binds you whether or not we repeat it here.
11. Payments
Genie has a free tier and paid plans. Subscriptions and payments are processed by Clerk, our authentication and billing provider; we do not store card numbers.
- Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel before the renewal date. Cancel from Settings; cancelling stops future renewals and does not refund the current period except where the law requires it.
- Prices are shown at checkout and may change. We will tell you before a change affects your next renewal.
- If a payment fails, paid features may be suspended until it succeeds. Free-tier limits apply again rather than your content being deleted.
- Refunds are handled by us where required by law or where the Service failed to deliver what was paid for; contact legal@genie.app.
12. Prohibited uses
- Scraping, crawling, bulk-downloading, or systematically enumerating people, reviews or profiles, by any means including automated agents.
- Building a dataset, a competing service, a searchable mirror, or a training corpus from the Service’s content.
- Attempting to de-anonymise a reviewer, to re-identify an author, or to circumvent blocks, rate limits, or the content screen.
- Reverse engineering, probing, or interfering with the Service or its infrastructure.
- Impersonating Genie, our staff or another member, or misrepresenting your relationship to us.
- Using the Service to recruit, advertise, fundraise, or distribute unlawful material.
13. Termination
You may stop using Genie at any time, and you may delete your account from Settings. Deleting your account clears your profile details — email, display name, handle, avatar and bio — from our records; reviews you published stay on the Service, re-attributed so that they are no longer identifiable to you, because removing them would silently rewrite the history other people relied on. The Privacy Policy explains this in full.
We may suspend or terminate your access immediately if you breach these Terms, if we are required to by law, or if continuing to serve you would put someone at risk. Where we do, sections 7 to 16 survive termination.
14. Disclaimers
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent permitted by law we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted or error free, or that any review is accurate, complete or current.
15. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Genie will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for loss of profits, revenue, data, reputation or goodwill, arising out of or related to your use of the Service or any content published on it — even if we were told such loss was possible.
Where liability cannot be excluded, our total aggregate liability for all claims relating to the Service in any twelve-month period is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in that period, or one hundred US dollars (US$100).
Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited, including liability for fraud, for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or any statutory rights you have as a consumer.
16. Indemnity
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Genie, its officers, employees and service providers from claims, damages, losses and reasonable costs (including legal fees) arising from content you publish, your use of the Service, or your breach of these Terms — subject always to section 15.
17. Changes
We may update these Terms. When we make a material change we will update the date at the top and, where the change affects your rights, tell you by email or in the product before it takes effect. Continuing to use the Service after a change takes effect means you accept it.
18. Governing law
(to be completed by counsel) — this section will state the governing law, the venue for disputes, any mandatory arbitration or class-action-waiver terms, and the consumer carve-outs that apply in your jurisdiction. Until it is completed, nothing here removes any right you have under the mandatory consumer-protection law of your country of residence.
Questions about these Terms, notices, and legal requests go to legal@genie.app. Safety concerns and appeals about moderation decisions can also go to safety@genie.app, described in the Safety Centre.
